Way back in the day, well to be more precise in the 70s (During the Troubles) here in Northern Ireland. I played for a local soccer team in the Newcastle League, County Down. Notice I use the term 'Soccer' and not football. Because you ether played Gealic Football or Rugby football in the school you went to, although by the 70s soccer became more popular and just known as 'Football'. And seen as a way of bringing players together across the devide in a more common game.
Once I remember getting to a home match, and those already there where chasing the cows off the pitch in preperation for the match. You got changed and ready for the match out of the kitbag which was in the boot of the managers car. And while you waited for the referee if you where lucky, you warmed up (more often than not, like that day you warmed up while waiting the opposition would were late) And the referee that day showed up on his tractor.
Ah yeah those were the days. Half-time you might have had half an orange, (while if it was someones birthday the older players would celebrate with a can off beer). And after the match it was up to the local hotel, to shower and a feast on a try full of chips and other lite bites. And more beer of course for those who choose that to wash it down. I, well a nice cuppa hot tea helped me warmup even more. Those where the days we can now tell our kids about as we heal the wounds caused by the period known as the troubles. And the kids and adults of today play on 4G pitches. Train a little more. And have the luxury of changing rooms :)
